How to Make Arch-Top Fabric Shades

Arch-top windows add a lot of architectural impact to a room. However, homeowners may be stumped by the unusual shape of the top of the window and think they can't install an attractive window treatment that works with the arch. But you can add a topper to any fabric shade that will fit your arch exactly and look good with your shade. The trick is to use fabric that plays well with your shade fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the arch-top window. Install a fabric shade with side mount brackets at the bottom of the arched part of the window. Screw the brackets into the inside window casing and slide the shade header into the brackets. Latch the header into place. The header should sit back from the front corner edge of the casing by 1/2 inch.

    • 2

Place a large sheet of paper over the arched window. Trace the arch and the bottom of the fabric shade header onto the paper. Cut out the outline with scissors. Trim around the arch so the paper pattern fits inside the arched opening with a 1/8-inch gap around the curves.

    • 3

Place the paper over 1/4-inch foam core board. Cut out the arch with a sharp artist knife. Spray one side of the foam core with spray adhesive.

Place decorator fabric face down on a work table. Position the foam core board sticky side down over the fabric. Smooth the fabric over the face of the board. Apply a bead of hot glue along the back side perimeter of the board and wrap the fabric to the back. Trim the edges 1/2 inch from the side.

    • 5

Position the board face side up and glue trims to the edge of the board to dress up the appearance of the arch. You can add other fabrics or create any design that works with your decor.

Screw L-brackets along the inside of the arch window casing 1/2 inch from the front edge. One leg of the bracket should be flat against the casing, and the other leg should be facing the room. Attach adhesive hook-and-loop tape to the front of the brackets and to the back of the foam core board. Use a long strip of tape along the bottom front edge of the shade header. Press the board into place.
