How to Make Lined Curtain Panels With Grommets

Make your own window treatments by sewing lined curtain panels with grommets along the top edge for hanging on the curtain rod. Lined curtains are thicker than many standard types and block light and shade the room. Grommets are a sturdy attachment that will not tear the fabric if the curtain is accidentally pulled. Sewing your own curtains are a low-cost option for windows, making it economical to make several styles so you can interchange them with the seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of curtain to sew by measuring the window length from the curtain rod to the point where you want the curtain to fall. Increase this measurement by 4 inches and write it down.

    • 2

Determine the width for the curtain by measuring the width of the window opening. Add 6 inches to the measurement for a smooth curtain or 12 inches for a slightly puckered curtain and write down the measurement.

    • 3

Cut a piece of fabric for the curtain using the length and width measurements. Cut a second piece of fabric for the lining, using the same measurements. Choose a solid, neutral color for the lining so it does not show through to the front of the curtain.

    • 4

Pin the curtain and lining fabric together so the rights sides are together. Sew the curtain with a 1/2-inch seam on the long sides and bottom edges. Clip the corners to remove excess fabric and turn the curtain right side out.

    • 5

Smooth the seams edges and corner, and then press the curtain with an iron. Turn the top edge 1/2 inch to the inside of the curtain and pin the two layers together to hold them in place. Edge-stitch 1/4 inch from the edge of the curtain around all four sides.

    • 6

Fold over the top edge of the curtain 2 inches to the backside for the top placket for the grommets. Pin the fabric to hold it in place. Sew 1/4 inch across the top edge and then sew 1/4 inch from the bottom edge of the placket to secure the fabric.

Mark the location of each grommet along the top of the curtain with a pencil, generally about 2 inches apart. Pound or snap the grommets into place, using the instructions for the type of grommets you are using. Cut away excess fabric inside the grommet holes, if needed.
