How to Make Beaded Door Hangings

Doorways without doors can be outfitted with curtains to block the view through the door; however, if you prefer something less solid and more decorative, you might want to use a beaded door hanging. You can customize a beaded door hanging by using colors that match the existing decor. The curtain can be a very simple solid affair, or you can go wild and create patterns and even pictures with the beads. Beads are available in materials such wood, glass, plastic and clay; choose from a variety of shapes, from long and thin to perfectly round.

  • Wooden closet dowel rod, cut to the width of your doorway

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the closet dowel rod the color of your choice. Let it dry completely.

    • 2

Draw a straight line across the length of the dowel using a straight edge. Mark the line at even intervals to guide the placement of the eye hooks. If the beads are very small, place the eye hooks close together; place larger beads farther apart.

    • 3

Install the dowel rod hardware to the door frame according to manufacturer's directions. Place the dowel rod in the hardware.

    • 4

Measure from the eye hook to where you want your curtain to end. Add 6 inches and cut that length of beading wire for each eye hook. Remove the dowel from the hardware, and tie one wire to each eye hook. Cut off the excess.

    • 5

String your beads. If you are using seed beads, thread a needle through the end of the beading wire to make it easier to string. If you are using beads with a larger hole, you can string the beads by hand.

    • 6

Knot the beading wire after stringing the last bead. If the bead holes are large, string a bead with a smaller hole onto the end and tie your knot below it. Tie several knots to ensure strength.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the remaining lengths of wire. Place the beaded hanging in the dowel hardware, and enjoy.
