How to Make Kitchen Curtains Out of Dinner Napkins

The kitchen, with its standard appliances and sparse furniture, presents a challenge to the home decorator striving to create a colorful, harmonious room. Kitchen curtains made from dinner napkins add a stylish, personal touch to a functional location, while incorporating colors and patterns from your dining table. Use identical napkins for an elegant look, or mismatched patterns for a patchwork quilt appearance. A kitchen window can support short cafe curtains or more functional long curtains, depending on your lighting needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the window to determine the desired length of your curtains. To cover the entire window adequately, your curtain width should be two to three times the width of the window. Add 6 inches to the estimated curtain length to allow for seams.

    • 2

Measure the napkins. Divide the total area of the curtains by the napkin area, to calculate how many napkins are needed. Allow some room for seams by deducting a half-inch from the napkin dimensions for each additional napkin.

    • 3

Lay the napkins on a flat surface, overlapping the edges as needed. On the topmost edge, fold over 2 inches of cloth and pin down securely. The curtain rod will slide into this groove when you install your curtains.

    • 4

Sew the folded edge in place with a straight seam, leaving a hole for the curtain rod to pass through. Sew all other layered napkins together piece-by-piece, creating your curtains. As you work, check the dimensions of the curtain, adjusting overlaps as necessary.

    • 5

Install the curtains on the rod, and place them on your window. If the curtains are too long or the bottom looks sloppy, hem the curtain by folding over the edge and sewing with a straight seam.
