How to Create a Rustic Door

A rustic door projects an image of being weathered but not worn out. Making a front door rustic is one of the easiest ways to make your home stand out from look-alikes in your neighborhood. By definition, something that's rustic is simple with a country appeal. For old and new homes alike, it's possible to make your front door or even an interior door have this charming quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Use paint remover to take off any paint that doesn't give a rustic feel. Sand away any glossy finishes carefully.

    • 2

Rub the surface of the door with steel wool to further distress its appearance. Rub only with enough pressure to create small nicks.

    • 3

Choose a rustic color for the door, such as a muted brown or antique white. Apply the paint or stain as per the manufacturer's instructions, and allow it to dry. Sand the surface lightly for an uneven look.

    • 4

Add vintage hardware to the door, or distress the existing finishes. Use sandpaper to instantly age the pieces.
