Good Colors for Walls With Terracotta Colored Tiles

Terra cotta tiles add interest and character to a room but can quickly overwhelm a room with their color if not properly tamed. Some colors will help balance out the brightness of the tiles by providing a neutral background for the vibrant tiles. Other colors will complement the tiles and create color harmony.
  1. Blue

    • Terra cotta and blue create a striking combination since they are complementary colors, exacly oposite each other on the color wheel. Several blue wall colors will coordinate with the terra cotta color, including cobalt, navy blue or denim blue. Use a lighter shade for a Mediterranean look, such as turquoise, aqua or teal. This will give the room a tropical appearance.

    Green

    • Green helps to anchor the terra cotta color in your tiles. Use a toned-down green, such as an olive or sage green. A darker green, such as a hunter green is another option. Since terra cotta can vary from a light yellow color to a near-red color, use the green that best coordinates with the terra cotta.

    Brown

    • Brown shades will help tone down the brightness of your terra cotta colors. Use light browns, such as beige, tan or sand hues. Darker shades of brown will help complete the space and provide a definite contrast to your terra cotta tiles. Honey and almond colors help give a natural look to the walls.

    Yellow

    • Yellow is an analogous color to terra cotta since they are next to each other on the color wheel. Use a pale yellow so the terra cotta tiles are allowed to shine.

    Red

    • Red can coordinate with terra cotta tiles if you match the tone of the tiles. Find a paint swatch that has the color of your terra cotta tiles on it. Find a red paint swatch from the same paint manufacturer. Look at the red color that is in the same position as the terra cotta color. Reds with brown or purple shades will coordinate with terra cotta, such as sienna, merlot or burgundy.

    Gray

    • Gray is a color that will help tone down the walls. This will provide a neutral background against your bright terra cotta tiles. A dark or light shade of gray will work for the color scheme.
