DIY Hang Canvas Window Coverings With Clips

Canvas coverings for windows provide privacy while still allowing a moderate amount of light to pass through to illuminate a room when the coverings are closed. Canvas window treatments sold in stores should have clips included that are designed to properly fit the window treatment. These clips usually require three to four screws to secure the canvas in place over the window. If you have custom coverings, installing general hooks with wire rope clips keeps the heavy canvas taught and secure.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at your canvas window coverings. Look for hardware clips that came with the window coverings. If you don't have any, buy two to four wall hooks, two turnbuckles, four rope clips and a spool of plastic coated wire from a local hardware store.

    • 2

Measure the width over the widow needed for the covering, marking each end with a pencil mark. Window coverings are generally 1 to 2 inches wider than the window on each end and can be flush with the window frame, or can extend higher to give the appearance of a "taller" window.

    • 3

Drill a hole into the wall where the pencil marks are. Use a drill bit approximately half the diameter of the wall hooks to ensure the hooks will have enough grip in the wall. For very long windows or heavy coverings, you may want a third hook centered to help keep the covering from drooping.

    • 4

Measure the cable to extend across the hooks, giving it 6 to 8 inches of extra length-space on each end. Cut the cable with the wire cutters.

    • 5

Place a turnbuckle on each end hook. The turnbuckle is a hook with an eyelet that twists to tighten the tension once the wires are in place. Keep the turnbuckle open all the way at this stage so you can adjust the tension later.

    • 6

Slide one end of the cable into the turnbuckle hook and wrap it back around itself. Place one wire rope clip at the part of the wire closest to the turnbuckle and one 3 inches away, where the wire ends. Secure the clips in place by tightening the bolts, securing the wire on the end.

    • 7

Run the cable through the canvas slot, pulling it through to the other end. The canvas will be droopy until you secure the cable to the turnbuckle on the other hook and tighten it.

    • 8

Secure the loose cable end to the turnbuckle on the other end attached to the hook. Fold the wire back over itself and secure it with two rope clips, as you did on the other end. Trim excess cable with the wire cutters.

    • 9

Rotate the turnbuckle to draw up the tension and remove the sagging.
