Tile Archway Ideas

Adding tile to your archway will focus attention on this important architectural detail. Archways make a home feel like it has more of an open-concept layout, which proves appealing to many home buyers. Whether you use tile to accent, frame or add character to your archway, doing so will add an elegant touch to your home.
  1. Frame

    • Use tiles measuring 6 inches by 6 inches to outline the shape of the arch. Ceramic tiles will create a subtle and elegant look. If you want a natural look for the arch, try a natural stone tile, such as travertine or marble. Glass tile will add an elegant and modern look. Take the color of your wall into consideration. For example, if you have a dark wall, white porcelain tiles measuring 3 inches by 5 inches will provide a striking contrast.

    Accent

    • If you want your guests to notice the arch, but you don't want to overwhelm them with tile work, consider using tile as an accent. Frame the arch with white paint and add tiles measuring 1 inch by 1 inch to the center of the frame, adding a subtle sparkle to the arch. Another option to create a subtle look is to simply line the inside portion of the arch.

    Border

    • Erect a wooden frame around the sides of the archway and add tiles around the curved top area, from one column to the next. Use a tile with more detail, such as one with a textured finish, a ceramic with a design in the center or decorative Spanish tiles.

    Faux

    • If you don't have an arch, add a faux arch to the room. Mural tiles are available that feature a variety of arch designs, including Tuscan and other Italian looks. Add the tiles to a bare wall and space the tiles evenly along the wall. The placement of the tiles will create the finished look of a mural that features an arch in it.

    Nontraditional Tiles

    • Add nontraditional tiles around your archway for a different look. Tile is available in a variety of shapes, including diamond, hexagon, arrow, flower, heart and in the shape of autumn leaves. Use a pattern or add individual tiles that are spaced 1 inch or more apart.
