How to Darken Windows in a Room

Sunlight streaming through crystal-clear windows is great -- until you work a night shift and need to sleep during the day. Or maybe you want to block solar heat or ensure privacy and security. You can darken the actual window itself or use specially designed window treatments to temporarily darken a room.

Instructions

Apply window film to the interior panes of your windows to darken a room. Window film comes in an assortment of dark tints, providing a privacy level to meet your personal preferences. Window tinting also protects a room's interior from harmful ultraviolet rays that can fade furniture and fabrics, while blocking solar heat in the summer.

Hang blackout shades to prevent light from coming into a room -- nurseries, bedrooms, media rooms. If you want to partially darken your room, the bottom-up/top-down blackout shades allow you to pull them from the bottom of the window upward, giving you privacy and as much natural light as you desire.

Install electrochromic windows to control the amount of daylight and solar heat that pass through the window into your home. A small voltage applied to the windows causes them to darken and reversing the voltage causes them to lighten. You can control the level of darkness in the room through the window itself.

Install wooden shutters or blinds to manually darken a room. The twist of a wand will adjust the amount of light that can stream into a room through wooden blinds. Closing the shutters, as well as their wooden slats, can darken a room significantly.

Hang thermal-backed draperies to darken a room and prevent heat gain in the summer, as well as heat loss in the winter. Thermal-backed draperies can darken a room and may save on energy costs by keeping your home a cooler temperature in the summer and warmer in the winter.
