How to Install Pergo Wall Base

Pergo wall base is specially designed to match Pergo laminate flooring, as well as other transition moldings used when installing a Pergo product. Pergo laminate flooring requires a 1/4-inch gap between the flooring and existing walls to allow for expansion caused by seasonal changes in climate. Pergo wall base is installed along the perimeter walls and fits against the wall, sitting on the Pergo laminate flooring and covering the gap that is required for a successful installation.

  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Pergo wall base
  • 1-1/2 inch finish nails

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter walls to calculate the amount of wall base needed for the area. Always account for accidental cuts and miter joint cuts. While measuring, place a small mark above where the molding will be placed on each wall stud with a pencil. This will guide you once you begin to nail the wall base.

    • 2

Place the first piece of wall base on one side of a door frame. Place the factory edge against the door frame with the bottom of the molding slightly sitting on the installed laminate flooring. Do not push the molding hard onto the laminate flooring. Doing this will create resistance when the flooring needs to contract and expand. Resistance in movement can create buckling in the flooring.

    • 3

Measure to ensure the other end of the wall base will hit a wall stud. If it does not, cut the excess off with a fine, sharp, circular saw blade. This ensures that the ends fall on a wall stud. Flipping the wall base over and cutting from the backside will reduce splintering the molding.

    • 4

Secure the wall base with 1-1/2 inch finish nails. Use the marks on the studs to ensure the nails are secured into a wall stud. Drive two finish nails, one above the other, into the wall base then into the wall studs. Countersink the finish nails with a nail set and a hammer. Be careful not to hit the wall base or flooring with the hammer as you secure the wall base.

    • 5

Cut mitered corners with a miter saw. Ensure that all corners are tightly secured with finish nails.

    • 6

Apply Pergo putty, once the wall base installation is complete, to the nail holes by placing a small amount of putty on a putty knife then pushing the putty into each nail hole. Scrape across the hole with a clean putty knife to ensure any excess putty is removed and you are left with a smooth finish.
