How to Block Window Glare

Window glare can be a difficult problem to deal with. It is one thing to get natural light in a room, but it's quite another to be blinded by it. Glare can occur off of passing or parked vehicles, or if the sunlight happens to be at just the right angle, it will glare through an ordinary window. Drapes and curtains are only a temporary fix. In order to block window glare, a film must be applied over the window

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window. Most window films are sold in a size of 24x36, but they have a repeatable pattern. Measure the width and length of the glass pane inside the window. Write down your measurements. It is also helpful to create a cardboard template or tracing of the size of the window.

    • 2

Cut the window film to fit. Trim the window film to fit your window. If your window is more than 24 inches wide, or taller than 36 inches, cut an additional sheet to the necessary size. For example, for a 30-inch window you would need two sheets of film -- one regular one and one trimmed to 6 inches in width. Use a utility knife and a yardstick to make an even cut through the film.

    • 3

Wet down the window. Use water with a drop of dye-free dish soap. Sponge this over the window glass.

    • 4

Apply the film. Start in the top corner of the window. Match up the corners of the film and slowly smooth it into place. Work slowly to make sure your edges are exact. Continue until all of the film has been applied.

Smooth out the film. Use a squeegee to gently go over the surface of the film to remove any bubbles or wrinkles. This should be done quickly, before the water on the glass dries.
