How to Attach a Liner to Roman Shades

Roman shades are one of the most versatile window coverings but are one of the most expensive to have custom made. Ready-made shades, while much less expensive, are not always lined, even though lining is necessary for privacy and insulation. The advanced home sewer has the skills to dismantle a ready-made shade and, by following directions for adding a liner, change the ready-made into custom.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shade from the brackets holding it to the window.

    • 2

Lay the shade flat on the work table, and measure the width. Measure the length as the distance from the top of the bottom hem to the bottom of the headrail.

    • 3

Cut the liner to the width measurement and to the length measurement plus 2 inches. Turn the bottom hem up 1 inch and sew in place.

    • 4

Cut the lift cords free from the bottom ring. Cut close to the ring, and pull the cords out of all the rings, leaving the cords attached at the headrail.

    • 5

Cut all the rings free. Leave the cut threads in place; they are the position markers for resewing the rings.

    • 6

Open the shade's side hems from just above the hem to just below the headrail.

    • 7

Place the liner wrong side to the wrong side of the shade, aligning the cut edge of the liner under the folded side edges of the shade, and the bottom hemmed sewn edge of the liner to the top of the shade hem.

    • 8

Fold the side seams back into place, and sew on the previous stitching line. Sew as close to the headrail as possible.

    • 9

Tuck the 1-inch extra fabric at the top between the headrail and the front of the shade. Use double-sided fabric tape to secure the right side of the liner to the front of the headrail, under the face fabric.

    • 10

Sew the rings to their original position. Use the previous stitching holes, as marked by the cut threads in the face fabric. Sew through both the lining and face layers. Remove the cut threads.

    • 11

Rethread the lift cord through the rings, tying each cord to the bottom ring. Place a small dot of fabric glue on the knot for added security.

    • 12

Rehang the shade on the brackets.
