How to Hang Curtains on Windows With a Small Window Above

Small windows above larger windows or doors are called transom windows. In some older homes, the windows will be operational. These windows were used to help air flow through rooms in hot climates. Today, most transom windows are used to bring in additional light and to add to the visual height of a room. Most decorators do not cover the transom window unless it produces glare on a television screen. Curtains should be mounted at the top of the functional window or between the transom and the top of the large window.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the curtain rod centered between the functional window and the transom window. Extend the ends of the rod 4 inches or more beyond the ends of the window. Mark the location of your curtain rod brackets with a pencil. A single window will use two outer mounted brackets. Windows set in a row will use a bracket between each window as well as the two outer brackets.

    • 2

Drill holes at your bracket mounting marks. Typically there are support studs in the wall between standard and transom windows, so your drill should enter solid wood.

    • 3

Screw the brackets to the wall or window trim at your drill holes. Use 3-inch-long wood screws rather than the screws sold with the rods.

    • 4

Slide your curtains onto the curtain rod. Press the curtain rod into the brackets.
