How to Hang Vertical Blinds on a Sliding Glass Door

Vertical blinds hang from the top to the bottom of windows and help create the illusion of space by emphasizing window height. According to the Home Depot Buying Guide, vertical blinds are ideal for sliding glass doors, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows and bay windows. They come in a wide variety of colors as well as textures, including vinyl or fabric. Use outside-mount vertical blinds, which are installed on the wall above the sliding glass door. Unlike inside-mount blinds, which fit inside window panes, an outside mount allows plenty of space for you to open and close the door without hurting the blinds. Outside-mount vertical blinds are also easy to install.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your vertical blind track and the length of the blinds to determine where they will fall. You can do this by holding the blinds up to the door as if they were hanging from the track. Mark where the top of the blinds end and add a few inches to accommodate the track.

    • 2

Mark a guideline on the wall above the sliding glass door. The guideline will tell you where to install the track brackets, so be sure to allow enough room for the door to open and for door handles. For a two-bracket system, JustBlinds.com recommends marking about 4 inches in from both sides of the track. This will be where you hang your brackets. If your blinds require more than two brackets, space the rest of your markings evenly along the width of the track.

    • 3

Drill the brackets into place. Use wall anchors and two screws per bracket to provide additional security.

    • 4

Insert the track into the brackets. Although manufacturers vary, many outside-mount tracks will easily click into place.

    • 5

Align all the blind carriers. The carrier is the small clip that the blinds are inserted into. They should all face the same direction. You can test them by pulling or turning the wand or chain that controls the blind direction.

    • 6

Insert the blinds into the carriers. Each blind should have a small opening at the top. Slide the blind into the carrier until it catches the blind and holds it. Make sure all the blinds are inserted in the same direction.
