How to Line Tiered Curtains

Also commonly known as cafe curtains, tiered or tier curtains cover only the bottom half of a window. The curtains work best in rooms with small windows or where a casual window treatment is called for, such as the kitchen or bathroom. They provide privacy without blocking out too much light. If you are making a set of tiered curtains that you think are too thin, add a lining to them for additional privacy.

Things You'll Need

  • Curtain fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric for lining, such as muslin or canvas

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the window.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fabric for the lining that measure the width of the window by the half of its height plus 3 inches. If your window is 36 inches wide and 44 inches high, cut two pieces of fabric that each measure 36 inches by 25 inches. Cut two pieces of fabric for the exterior of the curtains to the same measurements.

    • 3

Place one piece of lining fabric on top of one of the exterior curtain panels. The right sides of each piece of fabric should face each other and the wrong side should face you. Pin the pieces together on all four sides. Repeat with the other pieces.

    • 4

Stitch the pieces together on all four sides with a half-inch seam. Leave a 4-inch gap in the left and right sides for the curtain rod pocket.

    • 5

Turn the fabric of each curtain panel right side out through one of the openings on the side. Tuck the raw edges on the side openings under so that they are not visible.

    • 6

Sew across the width of the curtain panel, from the bottom of one of the gaps to the bottom of the gap on the opposite side.

    • 7

Measure 1 1/2 inches up from the row of stitches you just sewed, then stitch another row across the width of the panel to finish the rod pocket casing. You'll have a small, half inch header on top of the curtain.

    • 8

Slide the curtain rod through the casing and hang the lined tier curtain in the window.
