How to Hang a Frameless Mirror Using Adhesive

Frameless mirrors have a clean, contemporary look that many homeowners desire. Frameless mirrors, especially those weighing more than 20 pounds, require bottom support to handle vertical stress. Using a mirror cleat and mirror adhesive or mastic will support the mirror and hold it flush against the wall. A mirror cleat is a narrow metal track that is affixed to the wall before the mirror is hung. The installed mirror conceals the screws that hold the cleat in place.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the wall with a chalk pencil where you plan to position the center of the bottom of the mirror. Use a carpenter's level to draw a horizontal reference line across the wall at the level of the mark. Measure and mark the center of the cleat and the center of the lower edge of the mirror. Position the mirror cleat on the wall so the bottom of the track is aligned to the reference line on the wall and the center marks are aligned.

Mark the positions of the screw holes in the cleat on the wall by passing the tip of the chalk pencil through each screw hole in the cleat. Remove the cleat. Drill pilot holes through each screw-hole mark. The pilot holes must be just large enough to fit the sleeve-type wall anchors. Insert a wall anchor in each pilot hole. Tap the anchors with a hammer so their openings are flush with the wall surface.

    • 3

Reposition the mirror cleat on the wall, aligning its screw holes to the pilot holes or wall anchors. Securely attach the cleat to the wall by screwing the provided screws in with the drill and driving bit.

    • 4

Lay the mirror on a flat surface, face down. Apply mirror adhesive or mastic to the back of the mirror, according to the manufacturer's directions. It should be applied in beads or dollops, only a few inches apart. It is not necessary to cover the entire surface of the mirror. The adhesive should not be applied closer than 2 inches from the edge of the mirror.

Lift the mirror. Position the mirror on the wall with its lower edge seated in the track of the mirror cleat. Refer to center reference marks on the mirror and the cleat to accurately position the mirror. Apply even pressure to press the mirror against the wall.
