How to Interline Premade Drapes

Purchasing a set of drapes from the store can be a speedy way to dress your windows, but if the drapes aren’t lined, you may find the drapes don’t hang well, allow cool drafts into the room or are showing more sun than you want to let into the room. Luckily, interlining store-bought drapes is a straightforward process and doesn’t require extensive sewing knowledge or skills. Once you’ve selected your interlining fabric, you should be able to line your drapes in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread one of the pair of premade drapes out on a flat surface. Measure across the width of the drape and add 2 inches. Measure the length of the drape, add 4 inches, and then multiply the sum by 2. Purchase a fabric at least as wide as the determined width by the length needed. Cut the fabric into two pieces; each piece should be the width plus 2 inches by the length plus 4 inches. Set one piece aside.

    • 2

Lay the lining fabric out on the floor or another flat surface, turned so the front of the fabric is facing down. Fold the edges along the top and two sides toward the back by 1 inch. Pin the folds. Sew along the three pinned sides to secure the fold ¼ inch from the raw edge. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 3

Lay out the interlining fabric again, with the front down, on a flat surface. Fold the bottom edge (the only unsewn edge) to the back by 4 inches. Pin the fold. Sew the fold in place ¼ inch from the raw edge, removing the pins as you go.

Spread one premade drape out with the front of the curtain facing down. Lay the interlining on top of the drape with the front facing up. Align the top and side edges and pin every 6 inches. Leave the bottom edge unpinned.

Sew the two fabrics together along the top and two side edges by hand, using a coordinating thread or an invisible thread. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to line the other drape.
