How to Get Beds Up a Narrow Attic Stairway

Getting large pieces of furniture, such as beds, up a narrow stairway can be a bit of a headache for everyone involved, especially if you did not plan ahead. Before you start lugging your furniture up the stairs and into your attic, either to convert the attic to a bedroom or just for storage, take the time to figure out what the best way will be to move the heavy item.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble the bed as fully as possible. Take apart the bed frame, remove the rails from the headboard and footboard. Remove any other pieces that make the frame take up more room, such as disconnectable posts.

    • 2

Measure your stairway, including the width and the height between the treads of the stairs and roof.

    • 3

Measure your bed, including the height and length of the mattress, the box spring and all of the large pieces of the bed frame.

    • 4

Compare your stairway and bed measurements and determine the best way to get the bed up the stairs.

    • 5

Carry the bed up the stairs with one or more people on each end of large, heavy pieces.
