How to Hang Curtains From Ceilings That Have Baseboard Heaters Below

Curtains hung from the ceiling can serve many purposes. They can make the ceilings in a room appear taller. They can conceal an alcove or bay window area. They can even decorate windowless sections of the wall. No matter what the application, the sweep of curtains hanging from the ceiling contributes a sense of movement to the space. In the design of any home, however, safety must precede aesthetics. When you suspend curtains against a wall footed by a baseboard heater, common-sense precautions have to rule.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the origin point of your measuring tape on top of the baseboard heater and run the tape up the wall until you have measured 12 inches. Mark the 12-inch point with a pencil.

    • 2

Measure the vertical space to be covered. Whether you are covering windows or wall space, you have to accommodate the baseboard heater. Place the origin point of your tape measure at the ceiling and measure the distance from the ceiling to a point 12 inches above the baseboard. The curtains you use cannot exceed this length.

    • 3

Measure the width of the space you plan to cover, then multiply that measurement by 1 1/2 to 3 to arrive at the appropriate curtain width. For example, if the space is 40 inches across, you need curtains that are 60 to 120 inches wide. The wider the width, the greater the sense of fullness the curtains will impart.

    • 4

Install the ceiling curtain rod brackets. Parts required and detailed instructions for installing curtain hardware usually are included in the package. Installation typically requires drilling small holes in the ceiling and inserting plastic anchors into the holes. Anchors will hold screws securely in place. Adhering closely to hardware package instructions, screw the curtain brackets into the anchor with a power drill.

    • 5

Slide the curtains onto the rod. If your curtains incorporate a rod sleeve, work gently to avoid tearing the fabric inside the sleeve. For tab-top curtains, slide the loops onto the rod.

    • 6

Settle the rod into place on the brackets. Check to ensure you have accommodated the 12-inch baseboard heater clearance. If you were not able to find curtains that were short enough, hem the curtains by machine or by hand.
