How to Hang Two Drapes That are Sheer & Heavy

Select sheer and heavy drapery panels in colors and textures that complement your furnishings and add visual depth to your window display. If you hang both sets of curtains in the same color, choose sheers in one texture and heavier curtains in another texture. Combine curtains in contrasting -- for example, black and white -- colors or in two shades of a single color.

Hang a double curtain rod to hold the heavy and the sheer curtain panels. Select a rod to coordinate with the metallic or wood hardware or furnishings of the room. Adjust the rod brackets to the width by which you want to separate your heavy drapes from your sheers.

Hang the sheer panels first. Detach the removable inner curtain rod. Slide the sheer curtains on the rod. Replace the rod in its brackets.

Place the heavy drapes on the outer curtain rod. Attach the finials to the ends of the outer rod.

Play with different ways to pull each set of curtains. Pull back the outer drapes, for instance, and allow the sheer curtains to hang closed. Alternatively, sweep each sheer panel back with its front panel into a holdback. Adjust the panels to display the color and texture of both.
