How to Measure Windows for Tier Sets

Commonly seen in kitchens and bathrooms, tier curtains generally only cover the bottom portion of the window, offering privacy while still allowing the light to come in. Sometimes tiers are paired with a valance for a finished look. Generally sold in a pair of panels, the most common size of tier curtain is 72 inches wide by 36 inches long -- although you can find other sizes in specialty curtain shops, or make your own. Before you purchase a set of tiers, use the proper method of measuring the windows to ensure a proper fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the tape measure on the outside of the window casing. Measure across the window to the outer edge of the casing. Write down the measurement, rounding up to the nearest quarter-inch.

    • 2

Measure the window from the top, outside the casing to the bottom outer edge of the casing. Round up to the nearest quarter-inch.

    • 3

Divide the length measurement by three, and multiply the result by two. Tier curtains generally cover the bottom two-thirds of the window, so this number represents the ideal length for the tiers. Purchase tiers that are as close to that measurement as possible, always rounding up to ensure that the curtains are long enough.
