How to Texture a Smooth Painted Wall

Rooms appear more interesting and rustic when you paint them using texturized paint instead of smooth, flat paint. Although texturizing walls may seem like a complicated process when you look at the intricate appearance of the walls, even the most sleek and smooth walls can be transformed into highly textured walls by preparing and painting them in a specific way. Smooth walls become textured by using basic painting techniques and a few inexpensive home improvement supplies.

  • Flat trowel
  • Wall spackle
  • Fine-grain sandpaper
  • Vacuum

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe off the painted wall using a damp washcloth to remove any residue or debris. Allow the painted wall to dry for one hour.

    • 2

Dip the end of a flat trowel into wall spackle, then scrape the trowel along the wall in a horizontal motion. Position the trowel at a 45-degree angle as you scrape. This creates a textured appearance that resembles stone.

    • 3

Apply spackle over the entire wall using this method. Do not smooth the spackle down after it is applied. Allow the wall to air dry for 12 hours.

    • 4

Smooth down any areas that appear inconsistent or overly textured using fine-grain sandpaper. Move the sandpaper in small, circular motions.

    • 5

Vacuum the wall where you sanded to remove any dust.

    • 6

Pour latex wall paint into the bottom of a paint tray, then dip a 3-inch flat paintbrush into the paint. Apply the paint onto the areas around any windows and doors, along the top and bottom edge of the wall and in the corners.

    • 7

Dip a paint roller into the wall paint, then roll the paint over the entire textured wall. Apply two coats, allowing each coat to dry for eight hours.

    • 8

Use the paintbrush to tap wall paint into any texturized areas that may not have received paint with the paintbrush or roller. Allow the paint to dry for eight hours.
