How to Cover Rough Walls

Rough walls may have a shoddy, unfinished look, or they may simply have a finish that you dislike. Regardless of the reason, a rough wall can drag down the look of your home, drawing the attention away from carefully-chosen furniture and other design aspects. If you do not have the time or the ability to replace the walls, covering them gives your room a new look.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach large wall hangings to your wall using a hammer and nails to secure them close to the ceiling. A wall hanging gives your room a new tactile dimension as well as adding color and design. Choose tapestries that match your home decor. For example, if you enjoy a medieval aesthetic, consider reproductions of European tapestries. If you like a bright, tropical feel, choose long lengths of batik fabric for your walls.

Mount curtain rod brackets near the ceiling of the rough walls, and use them to support curtain rods bearing long drapes. This adds a romantic aspect to the room, and it suits rooms with a Victorian aesthetic very well. Use thick velvet curtains for rooms with dark carpet and heavy wooden furniture, or choose sheer curtains for a room with a Middle Eastern look.

Cover a small segment of the wall with temporary wallpaper paste using a paintbrush, then smooth a crumpled piece of tissue paper over it. Repeat until the wall is entirely covered with crumpled tissue paper. This technique is ideal for rough walls, as the wrinkles in the tissue paper disguise the texture underneath.

Place tall furniture in front of the rough wall. If the roughness is due to damage in only one spot, use a tall bookcase, an armoire or a china cabinet to conceal the area. Even a bookcase with no backing can distract the eye from the roughness, especially if there are interesting items placed in the bookcase.
