How to Make a Mirrored Door With Panes

A mirrored door with the appearance of divided panes can be used to extend the visual size of a room while providing privacy. Often French-style doors are installed in to create a formal transition without blocking light from the next room or the outdoors. However, if you would like more privacy and still want to maintain the aesthetic, consider replacing the glass panes with mirrors. The mirrors will also reflect light and make the room feel larger.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the caulk or glazing compound surrounding the pane insert on one side of the French door. Typically a removable pane insert will be attached to the inside of the door assembly.

    • 2

Remove any hole plugs or uncover the screw heads along the outer edge of the pane insert. Some manufacturers use plastic plugs, and wood doors may have dowels covering the holes. Usually you can pry the plug out with a small flat edged screwdriver or by using a drill. If you drill a hole in the plug you will need to replace the plug later.

    • 3

Detach the insert from the door. Remove the glazing or glazier's points that are holding the glass in position. Cut through the glazing with your utility knife and scrape off the excess with a putty knife. Push glazier's points away from the sides with a flat screwdriver.

Remove the glass from the door. Most newer doors use a single sheet of glass covered on each side with removable pane inserts made of plastic or wood. Measure the size of the glass. Cut mirrored glass to the same size using a glass cutter and straight edge. The mirror should be the same thickness as the glass that is removed.

Cut white cardboard that is laminated on one side. Spray the back of the mirror with a spray adhesive that is compatible with mirrors. Press the non-laminated side of the cardboard to the back of the mirror.

    • 6

Insert the mirror into the door so that the laminated cardboard is facing outward on the back side. Press glazier's points along the edges of the mirror--one point for every 12 inches of glass edge. Roll glazing compound into a rope and press along the edge of the mirror to help hold the mirror in place. Install the insert panel over the mirror and screw the panel to the door.

Fill edges with caulk. Replace screw plugs or dowels.
