How to Install Curtains With an Extension Rod

When you have a larger than average window or a set of windows placed side-by-side, an average curtain rod is not long enough to cover the space. An extension rod bridges the gap between two individual curtain rods, making one large rod that covers a bigger space. Hanging curtains from this type of rod involves the installation of two separate curtain rods and the brackets that hold those rods in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your curtains and decide where you want the curtains hung. If you want the curtains sitting flush with the floor, then mark the exact measurement of the curtains on the wall. If you want space between the floor and curtains, add a few inches to your measurement.

    • 2

Mark the location of your brackets on either side of the window. Make the mark as high as you want the curtains. Place one bracket against your mark and hold the bracket flush as you screw it into the wall. Move to the other side of the wall and screw the second bracket into the wall.

    • 3

Open the pocket along the top of the curtain and slide it onto one side of the curtain rod. Push the curtain down, sliding it onto one side of the curtain rod. If you use two curtains in the space, then place the second on the other side of the curtain rod.

    • 4

Insert the curtain rod extender into the side of the curtain rod without the curtain. Twist the extender slightly until it pops into place. Attach the opposite end of the extender into the other end of the curtain rod.

    • 5

Lift the curtain rod onto the brackets. Press one end of the rod onto one bracket and repeat on the other side. Adjust the curtains, making the fabric completely cover the window or hang on either side of the window.
