How to Install a Curtain Divider Using a Steel Cable

Sometimes the quickest and simplest way to divide a room is to hang a curtain across it. The curtain provides privacy, for example, if you want to split a large, open room into a separate bedroom and living area or if you want to divide a shared bedroom in half. If you do not have curtains wide enough to stretch across the room, try using flat bed sheets.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two ladders on opposite sides of the room in the spot where you want the curtain and cable to hang.

    • 2

Climb up one ladder until you are able to reach the ceiling. Measure 2 inches down from the ceiling using a ruler and make a mark with the pencil. Push the awl into the mark to make a shallow hole.

    • 3

Lift one end of the cable to the small hole. Have the person helping you take the other end and stretch it across the room, climbing up the second ladder as he does so. Have him use the ruler to make a mark 2 inches from the ceiling. The end of the cable should line up with this mark and the rest of it should stretch evenly across the room. Have him make a small hole with the awl.

    • 4

Trim the wire cable with the wire cutters so it is 10 inches longer than the width of the room.

    • 5

Twist the pointy, threaded end of each screw eye into the holes, until they are securely in place.

    • 6

Slide one end of each "S" hook into the looped end of each turnbuckle. Hook the other end of each hook into the eye of each screw eye.

    • 7

Thread one end of the steel wire cable through the other loop on the turnbuckle. Pull the cable so that 5 inches extends from the loop, then fold it so that the 5 inches lines up with the other part of the cable. Clip the two cable parts together with wire rope clamps to secure it to the turnbuckle. Repeat the process on the opposite end of the cable and with the other turnbuckle. The cable should now stretch tautly across the room.

Open the binder clips and hang across the width of the cable. Hang the curtain from the cable using the binder clips.
