How to Calculate Pilaster Strength

Pilasters are columns that appear to be built into a wall or facade. These masonry elements are used primarily in an ornamental functions. Unenforced pilasters offer little support to surrounding structures, but they can be reinforced with steel or grout if additional support is needed. Determine whether a pilaster is strong enough for your home, by considering some key factors before installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether the pilaster is moisture-resistant, by checking the packaging or consulting with the manufacturer. Install only moisture-resistant pilasters for exterior decorating. Not doing so can result in premature deterioration.

    • 2

Determine whether the pilaster -- if it is wooden -- is termite-resistant, by checking the packaging or consulting with the manufacturer. Install only termite-resistant wooden pilasters for exterior decorating.

    • 3

Determine whether the pilaster is rot-resistant, by checking the packaging or consulting with the manufacturer.

    • 4

Check the back of the pilaster, to see if it has been reinforced with steel. Consult the packaging or the manufacturer, to determine what strength of steel was used to reinforce the pilaster.
