How To Dress a Curved Window

A curved or arched window is challenging to decorate because its odd shape limits the type of window treatments available. However, you can dress up the window by covering it partially or fully. Use blinds, drapes or shutters to decorate a curved window, adding privacy and providing a finished look. A curved window adds an interesting architectural element to the room, so it is better to incorporate the window into the decor than hide it.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a curtain rod horizontally across the window, attaching the ends where the curve starts. This allows the top, curved half of the window to show while still giving you privacy. Use a decorative curtain rod, such as wrought iron, and soft sheers for a look that doesn't overwhelm the window.

    • 2

Attach a valance to the top half of the window so the arched part is covered but the bottom half of the window remains open. This gives you color and texture at the top of the window without blocking the view. Valances work best on narrow windows.

    • 3

Use custom-made vertical blinds that are cut to fit inside of the arch of the window. The top of the blinds are cut to different lengths so the window treatment hangs flush at the bottom of the window.

    • 4

Hang shutters that are custom-made to fit inside the window. Use two different shutters -- horizontal ones for the bottom half of the window and a fan-shaped shutters for the curved top half. Or use horizontal shutters for the window, leaving the top uncovered to allow the light to stream in.

Attach a long curtain rod above the peek of the arched window. Hang long, decorative drapes from the rod so that they touch the floor. These can be opened fully or closed completely. Select heavy drapes with a lot of texture.
