Measure the span in which you will stand your room divider. Measure the folding doors to determine how many you will need to join in order to stretch across the determined span. Remember that in the “folding” process required to make a room divider stand up, you will lose some length, so calculate for an additional 25 percent of the doors.
Unscrew and remove the knobs from the bi-folds.
Fill the holes left from the knobs by spreading wood filler into them with a putty knife. Allow the wood filler to dry for the suggested time on the label.
Sand the filled patches.
Sand the doors smooth with sand paper or leave them rough for a rustic look. Wipe the dust from the doors using a damp rag.
Stand the required number of bi-fold doors next to each other -- facing either inward or outward -- to create a “W” or accordion pattern. Once you have this configuration, use a hinge as a template or guide by holding it temporarily in place against the door edges that it will be hinging or attaching and marking the screw holes; you will be attaching one hinge 1-foot from the top and another hinge 1-foot from the bottom of each door “join.”
Keep the doors in the correct arrangement and close and stack them on the floor with the long edges flush. Screw the hinges into the marked locations.
Stand the room divider up and spray paint it in a color that works with your decor or leave it natural.
