Do-It-Yourself Swag for a Front Door

Front door swags take on many forms, but wreath and spray shapes tend to be the most common, such as an evergreen wreath for the holidays or a silk rose spray for a wedding. A homemade front door swag can be a creative and low-cost alternative to retail decorations. Purchase project materials at a thrift store to cut costs even more.
  1. Evergreen Wreath

    • Think evergreen and pine cones if you want to create a cheerful front door swag for the winter holidays. Wrap plastic evergreen garlands around a wreath form, and decorate it with small pine cones for a classic creation. Glue plastic beads, dried berries or mistletoe sprigs around the wreath to add some color to the swag. Wrap a battery-powered light string around the wreath if you want the swag to twinkle at night.

    Flower Bouquet

    • Dangle small flowers from a large floral bouquet to add a romantic touch to your front door. Create a large, rounded bouquet with the flowers, and wrap ribbons around the bottom of the bouquet, letting the ends hang down. Wrap a single flower to the end of each ribbon, and hang the swag on your door. Use real red and satin ribbons to give the swag a traditional style, or use white silk orchids and velvet ribbons to give the decoration an elegant look.

    Branch Spray

    • Gather pussy willow branches and ferns to create a spring-themed front door swag. Arrange the short branches and ferns in a fan shape. Wrap wire around the bottom of the arrangement to secure the spray shape. Wrap a large ribbon around the wire, and tie it in a large bow. Secure the swag on your front door with the fan facing up or tilted to the side. Add sapling branches and long-stemmed flowers such as daisies to the spray arrangement for a hint of color.

    Seashell Arch

    • Search for a driftwood branch with an arch shape if you want to hang beach-style swag from your front door. Drill holes in seashells, and hang them from the driftwood with twine for a rustic decoration. Glue sea stars and seashells on the driftwood for more detail, or dangle plastic fish from the branch for a cheerful touch.

    Easter Egg

    • Recycle decorative papers such as wrapping paper to create a colorful egg-themed decoration for Easter. Cut a large egg shape from a polystyrene foam sheet. Cut egg-shaped pieces from the decorative papers, and use them to cover the foam with a mosaic pattern. Use paper strips to create a striped pattern across the egg or crumpled tissue paper to create a floral appearance for the front door decoration.
