Double Roman Shades Sewing Instructions

A double Roman shade consists of two layers of fabric. One layer hangs flat against the window. It's usually sheer to allow light in while still maintaining some privacy. The second layer lifts up like a regular Roman shade. Lower it when you don't want any light creeping in the through window. Use a slightly sheer, lightweight fabric such as cotton voile or muslin as the first layer and a home decor weight fabric for the second layer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length inside the window frame.

    • 2

Cut the lightweight fabric so that it is as wide as the window and as long as the window, plus 3 inches.

    • 3

Cut the home decor weight fabric so that it is as wide as the window plus 2 inches and as long as the window plus 8 inches.

    • 4

Fold over the two sides of the lightweight fabric 1/2 inch, then fold over another 1/2 inch and pin. Stitch along the inside edge.

    • 5

Fold the bottom edge of the lightweight fabric up 1/2 inch, then fold up another 1/2 inch and pin. Stitch along the inside edge to hem. Set the lightweight fabric aside for now.

    • 6

Measure 12 inches up from the bottom of the home decor weight fabric, and make a mark with the fabric marker. Measure 6 inches down from the top of the fabric, and make a mark with the marker. Make three more marks, equally spaced between the top and bottom marks.

    • 7

Measure 1 inch away from each mark and fold the fabric so that the two marks meet each other. You'll have five little tubes across the width of the fabric. Pin the fabric tubes, and sew across the width on the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 8

Fold the bottom edge of the home decor weight fabric up 1/2 inch, then another 1/2 inch, pin and stitch along the inside edge.

    • 9

Line up the top edge of the home decor fabric with the top edge of the lightweight fabric. The wrong side of the home decor fabric should be against the right side of the lightweight fabric. Fold both fabrics down 1/2 inch together, then down another 1 1/2 inch and pin. Sew along the inside edge to make a pocket for the wooden dowel.

    • 10

Hand sew the plastic rings to the back side of the home decor fabric. Sew two rings on each tube, one on each side.

    • 11

Tie one end of the cording to the ring on the bottom left side of the fabric. Thread the cording up through the rings on the left side. Pull the cording over to the right side of the fabric, and thread it down through the rings on the right side. Cut the cording so that about 3 feet of it extends from the bottom of the fabric.

    • 12

Slide the dowel into the pocket on top of the shade. Twist one hook into the dowel, through the fabric, about 6 inches in from the left side. Thread the other hook into the dowel on the right side, 6 inches in from the edge.

    • 13

Position the double Roman shade in the window. Twist the screw eyes into the top, inside edge of the window frame, so that they line up with the hooks on the dowel. Attach the hooks to the eyes, and adjust the shade as you wish.
