How to Hang Wall Groupings

Decorating your home is a process of both self-expression and creativity. As you place wall hangings in your home, you can create groups that tell a story. A wall grouping may consist of pictures, tapestries or objects on a small shelf. You can arrange the pieces in ways that are both visually pleasing and interesting to the viewer. Some groupings may be a collage while others may show a timeline as part of the story.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you plan to hang your wall grouping. Keep the area within the boundaries of the nearby furniture so that the display appears balanced. For example, if you plan to hang the grouping above a sofa, the length of the display should be less than the length of the couch. The center of the grouping should be at eye level and the bottom should be approximately 8 to 10 inches above the closest piece of furniture.

    • 2

Place a string on the floor in a shape equal to the size of the area you plan to cover on the wall. For example, if the available area is 7 feet long and 4 feet tall, place a rectangle on the floor with string using those dimensions.

    • 3

Lay your art pieces inside the string, rearranging as necessary to fit the space. Place the largest pieces near the center and smaller ones to the outside. Keep the distances between each piece equal, approximately 2 to 3 inches. Stand on a chair to view your display and move the pieces around until you create a pleasing visual.

    • 4

Measure the distance from the bottom of the string to the top of the largest piece of art and the distance from the center of the piece to the edge of the display.

    • 5

Draw a pencil line on the wall marking the center of the largest piece. Keep in mind that the center of the display should be eye level and the base of the art is slightly above the furniture as you measured initially.

    • 6

Place the hangers on the back of the art piece and measure the distance from the hangers to the top and sides of the frame using the center as a reference. Mark the hanger locations on the wall by measuring the distances from the center point mark. If the art has a wire in the back, pull the wire tight as if it were on the wall to ensure that measurements are accurate.

    • 7

Hammer the hangers into the wall at the measured locations. Repeat the process for each piece of art, taking care to keep the same distance between items.

    • 8

Check each piece of art with a level to ensure that the arrangement appears balanced, then erase noticeable pencil marks from the wall.
