How to Create the Look of a French Window Pane

Plain windows gain a French flair with the addition of faux panes. French windows and doors consist of multiple, small panes creating a decorative appearance. The added wood in the window offers a chance for color and the door is broken into sections instead of one large, plain area. Instead of completely replacing a plain window, consider adding faux panes to the existing glass and frame creating the look.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window’s width and decide on the number of vertical panels. Divide the width into an even number for even panels. For example, if the window is 24-inches across, it divides evenly into four 6-inch panels. Measure across and mark the spots for the vertical panes with masking tape. Measure the window’s length and decide on the number of horizontal faux panes. Mark the areas along the side of the window with masking tape.

    • 2

Paint 1/8-by1/4-inch pieces of balsa wood to the desired color. Use a sponge or sponge brush to gently apply the paint and let it dry for at least eight hours.

    • 3

Cut 1/8-by-1/4-inch pieces of balsa wood to the length of the window with a craft or utility knife. The number of strips depends on the number of vertical panes selected.

    • 4

Apply a line of white craft glue to the back of the balsa and attach it vertically to the window. Use the masking tape line as a guide and use a level to ensure it is straight down the window. Add a few pieces of masking tape at the top, middle and bottom holding in place until the glue dries. Apply all the vertical pieces.

    • 5

Cut the pieces for the horizontal panes. Measure between the vertical panels for the actual width and cut the pieces accordingly with a craft or utility knife.

    • 6

Apply glue to the back of the horizontal strips and place them on the window. Use the masking tape horizontal markings as a guide and use a level to ensure they are straight. Place masking tape on each end to hold in place until the glue dries.
