How to Make Curtains Single Fabric or Split

Curtains are a simple project for most do-it-yourself crafters with a little sewing experience. If you use a casing and a curtain rod, you can often complete a single window in under an hour. If you want to part the curtains in the middle and tie them back during the day, split the necessary fabric width in half. Otherwise, you can make single panel curtains and pull the panel to one side to expose the window.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your window, including the casement. Add a minimum of four inches to the width of your window measurement and a minimum of four inches to the height of your window to determine how much fabric you need. You can always gather the excess width on the curtain rod, so using the full width of your fabric offers a simple solution for all but the smallest windows. For windows wider than the width of your fabric, use split panels the width of your fabric.

    • 2

Measure the length of your panel and mark with tailor’s chalk. Add additional inches if you want the curtains to begin more than one inch above the window casement or to hang significantly lower than the bottom of the window. Add one inch for every additional inch you want to cover. For example, if you want the curtains to begin two inches above the casement and stop at the floor, which is four inches longer than the window, add an additional five inches to the length.

Trim off the fabric selvage edges. Hem the sides by folding the right-side edge over 1/2 inch onto the wrong-side and then folding it over an additional 1/2 inch and pin into place. Stitch the side hems down and press flat. Repeat the process for the other panel if you make split panels.

Fold the right side of the curtain’s top edge down 1/2 inch and then fold it down 1.25 inches and pin into place. Sew the casing along the edge of the fold, leaving the sides open for the curtain rod. Repeat with the other panel if you use split panels.

Fold the right side of the curtain’s bottom edge down 1/2 inch and then fold it over an additional 1/2 inch and pin into place. Sew the hem and then press the bottom and top edges flat. Repeat with the other panel if you use split panels. Insert the curtain rod into the casing and hang the curtains on the curtain rod hardware.
