How to Install a Traverse Rod Cord With Pictures

Many modern drapery panels consist of a solid curtain rod mounted to the wall with the drapes looped around the rod. If the curtains need to be taken down, the rod comes down as well. A conventional traverse rod contains a cord that runs through a series of pulleys that opens and closes the curtains from one side. The curtains are attached to sliders that slide along the rod. If the curtains need to come down, the rod remains attached to the wall. When the cord is worn and needs replacing, referring to pictures can help you install a new cord.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the curtains from the plastic sliders. Remove the traverse rod from the wall with a screwdriver. Help from an additional person during this step is advisable, especially if the rod is long.

    • 2

Remove the worn or broken cord from the rod. It will be necessary to untie the end of the cord that is tied to the master carrier. Snip off the end with a pair of scissors if the knot is too tight and pull the cord out of the rod.

    • 3

Measure the length of the old cord and cut the new cord to this length, adding a few inches. If you are installing a cord into a new traverse rod, measure the width of the rod and the length the cord will drop down from the rod. Add these two numbers together and double the result.

    • 4

Feed one end of the cord into the left side of the traverse rod so that it runs over the first pulley at the top of the rod. Run the cord through the first hole in the master carrier, using a paper clip or crochet hook to grab the end of the cord and pull it through the hole. Tie off the end by making a knot in the end of the cord.

    • 5

Feed the other end of the cord up the same side of the rod so that it runs over the second pulley located below the first pulley. Pull the cord across the bottom of the rod and around the pulley at the far right end of the rod. Pull the cord across the top of the rod to the same master carrier where you tied off the other end.

    • 6

Determine the final length of the cord once the two ends meet at the master carrier. Run the other end of the cord through the second hole in the master carrier and tie off the end by making a knot in the end of the cord. Cut off any excess cord.

    • 7

Center the master slider on the top of the rod. Secure the bottom of the cord on the lower master carrier, located at the right end of the rod. Lock the cord in place, using the locking mechanism on the carrier. Pull the cord tight.

Secure the rod back onto the wall. Hang the curtains on either side of the rod, slipping the curtain hooks into the plastic sliders.
