I Am Having Trouble Hanging Floating Bookshelves Without Brackets

Floating bookshelves are popular in contemporary and minimalist decor. They are often used in museums and galleries to display artifacts and art pieces because little attention is detracted by the unadorned support. The shelves are attached to the wall by concealed brackets. Fasteners, such as nails and screws, are not visible. With secure installation, the floating shelf is surprisingly strong. Only basic carpentry skills and an understanding of how the floating shelf is constructed are required for proper installation.
  1. Floating Shelf System

    • The floating shelf is a two-part system that includes the shelf and mounting bracket. The shelf is a shallow box that is open on one edge. It is typically constructed from narrow framing planks or slats, supporting a thin, strong, finished-plywood outer shell. The box is sometimes covered with a wood or vinyl laminate sheeting material. The bracket is a cleat that is attached to the wall. Once installed, the open edge of the shelf fits onto the cleat.

    Overview of Installation

    • The wall is marked where you intend to hang the shelf. The cleat is positioned on the wall and an awl or pencil is used to mark the screw-hole positions on the wall. Pilot holes are drilled, then the cleat is mounted on the wall. The opening of the shelf is slid onto the cleat. Screws are used to attach the shelf to the cleat from the underside of the shelf.

    Organization

    • Organizing the installation process will make the job go smoothly. In addition to having necessary tools on hand, it is a good idea to label the shelf and cleat for proper orientation. Tools required include: a carpenter's level, pencil or awl, a chalk pencil, a drill with drilling and driving bits, a screwdriver, wall anchors and screws. Pre-made floating shelves with cleats have dedicated top and bottom sides. The bottom of the shelf and cleat typically have pre-drilled pilot holes. Use a chalk pencil to mark the tops of the shelf and cleat before you begin installation.

Secure, Level Installation of the Cleat

    • For a level installed shelf, the cleat must be installed level on the wall. This is accomplished by using a carpenter's level to draw a horizontal line on the wall, where the shelf will be installed. The top edge of the cleat is aligned to the horizontal line. Once the pilot hole positions are marked, holes are drilled into the wall. Winged wall anchors are installed in the pilot holes to distribute the weight of the shelf and its contents.

Attaching the Shelf to the Cleat

    • Once the cleat has been securely installed on the wall, the open edge of the shelf is aligned to the cleat and pushed into position. The shelf will fit snugly onto the cleat. The screws that attach the bottom of the shelf to the bottom of the cleat may be difficult to access with a drill and driving bit. Use a screwdriver to screw the shelf onto the installed cleat.
