How to Hang a Grommet Top Curtain Rod

Grommet top curtains rank as one of home decor's newest trends. Grommets, circular metal eyelets sewn onto a curtain's upper end, form the attractively pleated style. This contemporary look is uncomplicated to install. You hang the rod for a grommet top curtain as you would for most window treatments. Emphasize the same safety standards as you would for any home construction project. Safety glasses and a ladder keep you safe and secure as you accomplish the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure some paper along the wall in the prospective location of the rod. You will mark measurements on this paper, avoiding heavy marks on the wall.

    • 2

Measure where you should place the rod. For a window whose height falls below that of the room's door, the rod should be placed at the door's height. You should otherwise aim for a height of at least 4 inches higher than the window.

    • 3

Mark your measurements correctly. Draw a line in pencil at the intended height; make it long enough to slightly exceed the width of the window. Use a measuring tape or level to mark exactly where this line meets the window's corners.

    • 4

Gauge where to place the rod's brackets. Put one bracket on each side of the rod. Hold the rod level with the penciled line above the window. Mark the position of the brackets and their attachment holes on the temporary paper.

    • 5

Score holes through the temporary paper, using your pencil, to indicate the placement of the brackets' attachment holes. Lightly scribble a small "X" on the wall for each hole. This will tell you where to screw in the brackets later.

    • 6

Ensure that there is enough length of rod on either bracket for any additional bracket components you may have, such as finials. Set the rod and brackets down. Remove the temporary paper.

    • 7

Mount your brackets by screwing them in tightly. Use the small "X" marks you've already lightly marked on the wall to guide and place the screws.

    • 8

Place the rod onto one bracket.

    • 9

Slide the grommet curtain onto the rod. The curtain should have an even number of grommets, in order that it fits correctly and looks attractive.

    • 10

Position the rod's other end into the bracket. You may now attach finials, end rings, or any additional components to the rod's outer edges.
