How to Make Your Own Privacy Shades

Easy and attractive privacy and blackout shades can be made quickly and inexpensively to match the decor of any room. This type of shade is designed to prevent people from looking into your home through the windows. Usually the exterior of the shade is white to reflect light and conform to apartment or home owner association guidelines, while the interior can use an attractive patterned fabric that matches your interior colors. By using a blackout fabric lining, you can also completely control the light that enters the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Launder and iron your decor fabric and your blackout lining fabric. This will remove sizing, causing the fabric to shrink so that you can wash it later without further shrinkage.

    • 2

Measure the width of the window from inside the window casing and add 1-inch. Measure the height of the window from inside the window casing and add 1-inch. Cut your fabrics to these sizes.

    • 3

Place your decor and your lining fabric right sides together. Pin and sew around three sides using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Clip the corners of the seam allowance at a 45-degree angle to remove bulk. Turn the fabrics right side out.

    • 4

Turn the fabric edges of the open side under and inside 1/2-inch and pin. Sew a top stitch around all four sides of the shade. Quilt stitch across the shade at a 45-degree angle with a seam every 4-inches. Repeat sewing across your first set of seams with a second set of seams opposite the first set. This will create a diamond pattern.

Cut hook-and-loop tape the length of each side. Sew the loop portion of the tape 1/4-inch from the edge on the blackout lining side of the shade. Sew two parallel seams 1/4-inch apart. Repeat for the remaining three sides. Press the adhesive side of the hook tape to the face of the window frame 1/4-inch from the outside edge of the frame. Press the tape together to hang the shade.
