How to Hang Drapes on a Recessed Bay Window

Recessed bay windows add appeal to an otherwise ordinary window space. Bay windows are made up of three or more windows, and feature a large window in the middle and smaller windows on either side. The smaller windows are angled out from the existing wall, creating a recess in the wall called a bay. While this style of window is very attractive, it can be challenging to hang drapes along the entire window's length. However, hanging your drapes to cover each window pane separately is actually very simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure each window to determine the rod length and drape size needed to accommodate the recessed space. When hanging drapes in a recessed bay window, you will need to determine the width and length of drapes needed. Carefully measure each window from left to right and from the top of the window to the bottom of the window.

    • 2

Determine where you want your rods to begin and end on each window. It may be necessary to extend the rods past the window framing to accommodate spaces between the windows, especially if there is a substantial amount of space between the windows. If the space is large enough to add another rod, this may be a better solution. Attach the rod mounting brackets along the top of your windows according to the type of drapes you have chosen. If your drapes extend above the rod when hung, ensure that the placement of the mounting brackets will leave ample space for the drape's top.

    • 3

Mount the rod brackets in the predetermined placement using the appropriate hardware and a cordless screwdriver. Hold the mounting bracket in position with one hand and screw it into the window framing, using the hardware designed for your specific rod, with the other. Follow the installment instructions for your specific brand and type of rod. Ensure the mounting brackets are level by placing a level across the rod's span.

    • 4

Thread the curtain rod you have chosen through the tops of the drapes. Be careful not to snag your drapes or stitching.

    • 5

Connect the rods to the mounting brackets according to the make and style of the curtain rod.

    • 6

Fan your drapes evenly across the curtain rod until you create the desired look you are trying to achieve.
