Ideas for Hanging Large Wall Clocks in Hallways

A hot new style trend is decorating with large wall clocks. While clocks on the wall are nothing new themselves, decorating with them adds design and style to a plain, boring wall or hallway. If your hallway is lacking pizzazz, a large wall clock could be just what you need to turn your style from humdrum to an eye-stopping look, sure to draw attention.
  1. Large Singular Clock

    • It can be daunting to stare at a blank space on your wall, when you are out of design ideas for a particular space. Your hallway is a location that doesn’t have to blend in with the rest of the adjoining room’s decor. This allows you to show off a clock design that does not fit in with the style of your living room. Making it the hallway’s main focal point or centerpiece, a large decorative clock can take up a lot of space in a hallway, but it can add a lot of character to a lonely wall. Large clocks are a great way to show off individual style and design that go into the clock and its shape and trim. Large clocks can be made from metal, wood, chipped board, glass and plaster. When hanging a large clock, similar to the Grand Hotel clock at Pottery Barn, you need to attach the back of the clock to nails and hooks placed on wall studs for maximum support.

    Nonworking Clocks

    • Having a large working clock in a hallway is attractive and useful. Not all clocks have to work to form a design statement. If you have several large clocks that are antique finds or have a distinct design element – don’t keep them hidden in a closet or attic. A hallway is a great place to hang and display antique clocks that have come to the end of their working lives. Start by hanging your largest clock in the center and scatter smaller clocks around it. Stick with a color or design theme so everything coordinates.

    Vintage Clocks

    • Vintage clocks can be original finds from the 1930s to the 1970s, or they can be replicas. Vintage clocks are easy to find at your favorite local flea market or town treasure store. Most designs are round with glass covers and come in an array of colors. Large outdoor vintage clocks from a town square or bank make great focal points in a hallway. Because of the size, the clock is best supported on a ledge or shelf against the wall. Use vintage finds, such as old books, vintage floral postcards, display signs and vintage toys, to accent the space around the clock.

    Cuckoo Clocks

    • The cuckoo clock varies in size and makes the perfect centerpiece for your hallway. The cuckoo clock was invented in Schoenwald, Germany, in 1737. It is a mechanical-style clock whose trademark look is reminiscent of an old German village building with one or more small birds that pop out of the top of the clock and signal their distinct cuckoo call at designated times, such as 30 or 60 minutes past the hour. Styles vary but are most often found with mechanical pine cone chains that need to be wound daily or routinely. A large cuckoo clock can be clustered with other varieties to make a statement. Support and hang your cuckoo clock on sturdy wall studs for firm and secure positioning.
