The baseboard gives your room a finished look by placing a strip of wood across the wall where it meets the floor. A baseboard may be plain or elegant, but if it starts to pull away from the wall, it creates a battered and clumsy appearance. A gap also leaves the baseboard without the support of the wall, making it more vulnerable to cracking. Fix your baseboards as soon as you notice a visible gap.

Push a small bead of phenolic-vinyl caulk into the gap using a caulk gun.

Smooth the bead of caulk out so that it covers the gap thoroughly.

Wipe up any stray caulk with a wet sponge immediately.

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 as many times as necessary to cover the gap entirely.

Allow the caulk to cure. The amount of time this takes is listed on the package’s label.
