Wall Partitions Made With Wood Lattice

Wall partitions are an effective method of shielding a patio from high winds or direct sunlight. The partitions are also useful to block visibility of unsightly garbage cans, compost piles or deteriorating structures. Wood lattice is a valuable partition material because it is difficult to see through while at the same time allowing the elements to flow through at a controlled pace. The wood lattice partition wall is lighter weight than a plank wall and is resistant to heavy winds.
  1. Prepare the Support Post Anchors

    • Mark the perimeter of the wood lattice partition wall on the ground with a yellow chalk line. Make certain to construct the wall so it is stable and strong enough to withstand heavy winds and weather. You can provide adequate anchor holes by measuring every 4 feet along the line and marking the spot to dig holes 2-feet deep to set the 4-by-4-inch support posts. A fence higher than 6 feet requires deeper anchor holes.

    Set Support Posts

    • Set a support post in the center of a hole and pour ready-mix cement into the hole around it to provide an adequate anchor for the fence. Continue the process until all support posts are set in cement. An effective way to do this is to make a mark that is 2-feet up from the bottom of 4-by-4-inch support posts of the same height. Place the posts into the cement up to the 2-foot mark so that all of the posts are the same height above the ground. Brace the posts so they are straight up and down and let the cement set up overnight.

    Wood Lattice Partition Mounts

    • Determine the position of the wood lattice on to the 4-by-4-inch support posts by positioning a 4-by-4-foot section of wood lattice between two posts and holding it at the height you want to place it. Make a mark on the support post at the top edge of one end of the wood lattice. Measure the distance down from the top of that post to the edge of the lattice partition. Measure the same distance down from the top of the other post and mark the location so the lattice partition is level between the two posts.

    Install the Lattice Partition

    • Position a 4-foot length of 2-by-2-inch board so the top is flush against the mark you made earlier. Place the edge of the board so it is lined up evenly with the outside of the support post and attach it with wood screws. Screw another piece of 2-by-2-inch-by-4 foot board onto the support post next to the first. Leave approximately 1/2 inch of space between the two mounting boards. Repeat the same process on the other post. Place the edges of the lattice board into the slots and hold it steady. Drill holes from the side of the 2-by-2-inch mounting post through the edge of the lattice board and the mounting post on the other side. Secure the lattice board with steel bolts, washers and nuts.
