What Are Knock-Down Walls?

Although the term "knock-down wall" may make you think of a wall that has been or soon will be demolished, a knock-down wall is actually a wall that has been embellished with texture. Knock-down is a method of texturizing a wall to make it look more attractive. Knock-down texture is one of the most popular, along with orange peel texture
s. You also may find slapbrush and popcorn textures on walls and ceilings.
  1. Knock-Down Texture

    • Knock-down walls include thin spatters of drywall compound applied to a wall. A knock-down wall could prove to be sharp if it is not properly smoothed within a few minutes of application. To make the compound smooth, use a 12-inch drywall knife to spread and flatten the ends of the spattered compound.

    Orange Peel Texture

    • Orange peel texture gets its name because the texture resembles the outside of an orange when applied to walls. Orange peel texture includes a rough, but fine, pattern of small bumps on the wall. This texture is sold in spray cans. These spray cans feature nozzle adapters that either increase or decrease the textured surface on the wall.

    Slapbrush Texture

    • Slapbrush texture is also known by a couple of other names, including palm texture and tiger skin texture. Slapbrush texture is recognizable by its diversity of shapes and sizes. Slapbrush texture is created using custom texture brushes to apply round and square shapes to the wall.

    Popcorn Texture

    • You may often find popcorn texture on ceilings, but rarely on walls. Popcorn texture includes thousands of sharp, tiny dots. Because this texture is sharp, using it on walls could cause inadvertent cuts and scrapes among those who accidentally brush up against the wall.
