How to Hang a Kitchen Window Tier

Kitchen windows intercept more airborne moisture and grease than windows in other rooms and, as a result, wood, vinyl or fabric blinds take a beating. Washable curtains covering only the window, however, provide privacy and easier to clean. Tiers include a cafe curtain and valance.

Things You'll Need

  • Yardstick or metal measure
  • Cafe curtain rods
  • Pencil
  • Mounting plates
  • Drill

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your window to determine the length of rod needed to hang your tiers. Standard tier curtain lengths are 24 and 36 inches. Buy curtains that total at least one and one half the width of the opening to cover.

    • 2

Find the center of the window for the cafe rod. If you have window sashes, this is typically where the top and bottom sash meet. Mark where the base of each mounting bracket will be with a pencil.

    • 3
Tier rods mounted on wallboard need wall anchors.

Place one mounting bracket on the wall or frame on one side of the window. Drill holes with a 3/32-inch bit in drywall for plastic anchors and tap them in with a hammer. Use a 1/4-inch drill bit to start screw holes in a wood frame.

Attach the first mounting bracket to the wall or frame with the screws from the kit. Repeat the mounting bracket installation on the opposite side of the window.

    • 5

Pop the curtain rod into the cradles on the ends of the mounting brackets. Alternatively, tip the rod up and slip the holes on top of the rod over the post on top of the mounting bracket and roll the hole on the bottom clicks on to the post on the bottom of the bracket.

Check the rod with a fluid level to make sure it is level and adjust one side if necessary. When the rod is level, remove the rod, gather the curtain on it and rehang it. Repeat the process for each tier or valence.
