Do It Yourself Mudroom Storage Wall

Mudrooms become a catch-all for life's everyday necessities. They are a dumping zone for umbrellas, bags, purses, backpacks, coats, shoes, sports equipment and clothing accessories such as scarves, gloves and hats. But the room does not have to look like a war zone. With a little planning, your mudroom can be an organized, functional and even beautiful space. A storage wall may be enough to turn your mudroom from a disaster area into a place you are proud to have in your home.

Instructions

  1. Plan Your Mudroom Storage Wall

    • 1

Make a list of all the items you want to store in your mudroom. This may be easiest to do while standing in your mudroom and looking around to see what items are piling up in the space.

    • 2

Look at the list you made to determine what type of storage you will need. Will you need mainly baskets or hooks? Would drawers be the best way to go, or are shelves the most practical thing for your items? Figure out the best storage solutions for the items on your list.

    • 3
Graph paper is ideal for plotting out your mudroom.

Draw a shape on a piece of paper that is the same shape as your mudroom. Using the storage solutions you determined in Step 2, plot out how you want to lay out your storage wall.

    • 4

List the number of items you will need on another sheet of paper. Everything from shelves to hooks to cupboards should be detailed. Using that information, make a materials list of everything that has to be purchased to create your mudroom storage wall. If you need help making a materials list, take the drawing and your itemized list to the hardware store and ask for help figuring out what you need to buy.

    • 5

Check out your tool cabinet and see whether you have all of the tools you need to assemble the wall. If not, add the tools you need to get onto your materials list.

    • 6

Pick up all of the materials and tools you need to create your mudroom storage wall at your local hardware store.

    Build Your Mudroom Storage Wall

    • 7

Remove all of the items in your mudroom so the space will be empty and easy to work in.

    • 8

Unload the materials and tools you purchased at the hardware store in an area close to your mudroom.

    • 9

Assemble your storage wall with the materials you bought. Use your drawing as a guide. If you are putting up peg board or panel wall as a backer to your shelves, hooks, and other accessories, hang that on the wall first. Use the stud finder to find the studs to attach the backer board or other material firmly to the wall.

    • 10

Attach your shelves to the backer board, peg wall or other product. Shelves should be hung first; use the tape measure to ensure the shelves are installed in the right place the first time. Then hooks, drawers, racks and the rest of the accessories can be placed on the wall.

    • 11

Clean the area and place all of your mudroom items on your new storage wall.
