How to Make Modified Kingston Valances

Valances are window treatments that are typically hung from the top of the window frame with a curtain rod, or fastened to a board that holds the swag against the ceiling to hang down over the window area. Swag valances are made so that both ends of at least one area of the valance are attached to the top of the valance every few inches. This causes a natural fold in each portion that is attached to the top of the valance. Kingston valances create a smaller swag effect because the ends of each swag portion are sewn into the seams of each section at the "cone" formed by the fabric between the swags rather than to the top of the valance.

Instructions

  1. Modify Ready-Made Valances

    • 1

Hang the Kingston valance up or lay it out on a work surface. Insert a curtain rod if you will hang the valance from a rod. Staple or nail the valance onto the board that will hold it onto the ceiling if you prefer a sturdy board over curtain rods.

    • 2

Add trim to the bottom edge of the Kingston valance, if desired. Pin fringe, lace or tassels along the bottom edge. Stitch the selected trim items securely onto the valance.

    • 3

Sew or glue decorative items like buttons, metal decorations or artificial flowers onto each cone shape between the swagged areas.

    • 4

Consider changing the look of the cones between the swags. Cut lace or a contrast color of fabric to fit over each cone. Pin the fabric in place and stitch it on securely.

    • 5

Add items to the swagged areas, if you wish. Stitch or glue a string of beads onto one or more of the swags in each section of the Kingston valance. Use decorative cording in metallic colors or in colors that contrast with the valance fabric rather than beads, if you wish.

    Modify Valance Patterns

    • 6

Lay out the fabric you will use to make your Kingston valance. Measure the intended horizontal distance of each swagged area. Allow extra fabric to form cones between swags if you intend to form more than one swag area in the valance.

    • 7

Cut lace or contrast colors of fabric if you want to cover the cones with a different fabric than the rest of the valance. Pin the fabric onto the cone area and stitch securely before making the swagged areas.

    • 8

Pin the swags in place. Form and pin the cones in place. Sew the valance to hold all swags and cones where you want them.

    • 9

Sew fringe or lace trim onto the bottom edges of the Kingston valance as desired.

    • 10

Use needle and thread or a glue gun to add buttons or other embellishments to the top of each cone if you wish.
