How to Build a Projection Screen With Window Blinds

Make a projection screen for your next movie night using black out fabric and a roller blind kit. Black out fabric eliminates any light that may seep through the screen when you try to watch a film or video. Use drapery weights on the bottom corners of the fabric to keep it smooth and taut when in use. Hang the blind from the ceiling. When not in use, it will hang just below the ceiling and be barely noticeable.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 ceiling brackets for a roller shade
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • Screws or other appropriate mounting hardware
  • 2 yards black-out fabric, white or off-white
  • 3 drapery weights, 1 inch
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Double sided tape (may be included in the roller blind kit)
  • Scissors
  • Roller blind kit, 72 inches long

Instructions

    • 1

Mount the roller shade ceiling brackets to the ceiling in the area where you want the roller shade screen to live. For best results, choose an area in front of wall with enough room for a projector in front of it. Use a measuring tape to make sure you have 72 inches between the brackets.

    • 2

Spread the fabric on a flat surface, wrong side up. Place one drapery weight in each corner of one 72-inch side, 1 inch from the bottom edge. Set another drapery weight in the center of the same 72-inch side, 1 inch from the edge.

    • 3

Fold the bottom edge of the fabric up, concealing the weights. Pin in place.

    • 4

Sew along the inside edge of the 72-inch side, attaching the weights to the fabric and hemming the raw edge.

    • 5

Cut a 72-inch long strip of double sided tape. Peel the backing off of one side. Press the tape to the unsewn, 72-inch edge of the fabric.

    • 6

Peel the backing off of the other side of the tape and press the fabric and tape to the bar included with the roller blind kit. Position the fabric so that it falls over the front of the bar.

    • 7

Roll up the fabric around the roller blind bar, as smoothly and tightly as you can.

    • 8

Hang the bar between the two brackets. Pull the fabric up and down a few times to get it to hang evenly.
