How to Do a Swag Valance With Fabric Pulled Through to Make a Pouf

A swag valance is loose, flowing fabric draped in U-shaped drops over a curtain rod. It is one of the most elegant forms of drapery and you can incorporate it into any decorative scheme. One common way to hang a swag valance is to drape the fabric in a pattern, with the two ends hanging and pulled to the side in knots. You make these knots by pulling the fabric though itself to create a pouf.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase two decorative hooks for the ends of your swag valance, plus one hook for each drop you would like your valance to have.

    • 2

Install a decorative hook on each side of your existing curtain rod. Your valance should be wider than your window and frame your existing curtains. Install the additional hooks, spacing them equally going across the width of the window. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for attaching the hooks to your wall.

    • 3

Measure your window. Purchase a swag valance at least three times its width if the window is wider than it is long, or at least three times its length if your window is longer than it is wide. This provides enough swag to go across the top and hang down the length of the window on both sides.

    • 4

Lay the swag valance on a table, backside facing up, and fold the fabric in an accordion fashion. The accordion-style pleats should be equal widths apart with an equal amount of fabric hanging loose on both sides.

    • 5

Hang the swag on the decorative hooks with each drop hanging from its own hook.

    • 6

Tie the ends of the swag valance into a knot to create a pouf. Take one end of the swag valance and pull the bottom up toward the center forming a hanging loop. Wrap the fabric around the loop by holding the loop in place with one hand and pulling the fabric around the back of the loop with the other.

Pull the fabric around to the front of the loop on the other side of it and pull the fabric through the hole in the loop. Do not pull tight if you want to create a puffy knot.
