How to Cut Down the Width of a Head Rail for Aluminum Blinds

Aluminum window blinds feature a head rail at the top that attaches to the inside or outside of the window frame. If you have windows that are not a standard size, you may need to trim the head rail so that the blinds will fit inside the window. You may also need to trim the blinds if you are moving them from one window to another. Cutting the head rail to the correct width is a task that shouldn't take too much time or effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width at the top of the window, either inside the frame or on the outside.

    • 2

Calculate the width of the head rail. Subtract the width of the window from the width of the head rail to determine how much you need to trim the head rail.

    • 3

Divide the difference in width between the head rail and window by two. From each end of the head rail, measure in half the distance then draw a line with the marker. For example, if the difference in width between the window and head rail is 6 inches, measure 3 inches in from each side of the head rail.

    • 4

Take the small metal or plastic stiffener out of each end of the head rail. Set the stiffeners aside as you will need them later.

    • 5

Put on safety goggles. Use a hacksaw to cut away the excess head rail at each end.

    • 6

File the cut ends of the head rail smooth. Replace the stiffeners on each end of the head rail then hang the blinds.
