How to Build a Floor-Mounted Curtain Holder

Floor-mounted curtain holders are used typically to divide large rooms into smaller areas. This style of curtain holder is also suitable for use in cases in which you want to curtain a window that has no drapery hardware. Secure a floor-mounted curtain holder to the floor to prevent accidental injury from a falling fixture. Make your holder light enough to lift into position but strong enough for the expected weight load of the curtains.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your curtain rod area. Typically, the flange used to mount the rod will extend away from the rod by at least 2 to 3 inches. Allow for this during your measurement of length by subtracting the width of one flange from your overall length measurement. Measure the height of your curtain rod area. Subtract the height of the flange plus the thickness of one elbow from your height measurement.

Cut two pipes to height and one pipe to length. Use a pipe thread-cutting tool to carve threads into the ends of each pipe. Home improvement stores often rent this tool.

    • 3

Screw one "height" pipe into an elbow and into a floor flange. Repeat for the second pipe. Spray-paint all of the pieces if you want the metal to be a color other than its unfinished one. Use a spray paint designed for metal painting. Allow the paint to dry for four hours.

Cut matching curtain fabric twice the height of the holder. Measure the circumference of the pipe and add 1.5 inches. Cut your strips to this width. Cut two strips. Hem the narrow ends. Fold the fabric along its length and face sides together. Sew a half-inch seam along the length. Turn the tube face out. Repeat for the second strip. Slide one tube over each height pipe. This will help hide the holder behind the curtain.

Screw the top pipe into the open ends of the two top elbows. You can attach rings and hang your curtains. You can also slide grommet-top curtains on the top rod before you screw it into the elbows. Fasten the flanges securely to the floor using long wood screws, bolts, nuts and washers or masonry fasteners, depending on your flooring circumstances.
